Subject:2 minute update
Time:07:55 pm
I have 2 minutes left on this computer.

I'm in Motueka, New Zealand. I have visited two intentional communities, hitchhiked about a thousand kilometers, begun adding the word "heaps" to my vocabulary, hiked above a glacier, got stuck at the top of a mountain in bad weather for 2 nights with no water, and had a lot of fun so far. Now, I have to go water the vegetables and shell nuts for nut butter.

More to come, I guess.

Four days! Or, more like three now...

I'm all excited and scared and stuff. And I have like ten thousand things to do before I go.

Okay, time for bed.

Subject:Yay! Insurance!
Time:04:17 pm
I have health insurance! Blue Cross has approved me for an individual policy. They're going to let me give them money! Yay!!

I have insurance now, through my employer, but I'm getting a much cheaper major medical plan so that I'm covered while travelling, without having to pay for COBRA. This process has been sort of ridiculous... I've had to go to the doctor again to get a note saying that actually, I am healthy despite the fact that I've been to the doctor recently. Oh, and I haven't had asthma since I was a kid, etc. They were going to drop me because of a combined asthma/allergic rhinitis (ie. hay fever) diagnosis. For some reason, they don't care at all about the life-threatening insect sting allergy, but whatever. I guess for them the two possible outcomes are, "Ian gets minimal medical attention, and is fine the next day," or, "Ian dies." Either way, it doesn't cost them much.

I hate insurance companies.

Subject:Packing
Time:02:40 am
I spent the day packing up everything I own. I've been poking at it for about a month, but this is the last full day I'll have to devote to it before I move out. There's a big heap of stuff that's going to friends, or in the street, or something. Then there are a bunch of boxes that go to my parents' storage unit in Forestville. I wish there were less of them. I decided to keep my kitchen (4-5 boxes), some books and stuff, and one playa bin (burning man in a box!). Somehow, it ended up becoming what looks to be a whole pickup-load. I hope there's room. If not, I'll just get rid of more things, I guess.

How do I manage to accumulate so much stuff? I don't even have that much of it compared to other people. Some part of me wants to just dispose of everything I've packed. I have two bags that I'm keeping out. One is filled with my essential stuff for the NZ trip, and the other with warm-weather clothes and stuff for Chicago. Aside from that, there's the lightweight tent I bought today, and this computer.

I feel an intense desire to give away everything I own. It wouldn't be practical -- I will someday live in a house again, and the things I have packed up will be very useful. Right now they do nothing but annoy me.

Let it be known that in January, I will be couch-surfing from the 5th to the 22nd. I figure I have enough friends around here that I can manage 2.5 weeks without imposing on any one person too much.

Subject:yay! camera!
Time:10:41 am
I'm getting a camera this afternoon! I found a really good deal on a Canon PowerShot S400. It's not quite as tiny as the SD300 (the camera I *really* want), but it's waaay cheaper, and except for the size it's almost the same.

It's been years and years since I've had a camera that I actually liked using. Ever since switching to digital (something that happened to me as a consequence of the nakedraver thing), I've had a lot of trouble pulling out my old Minolta. I just can't handle the thought of processing (and then scanning) slides, unless there's some specific reason I want to use film. Then, it got stolen out of the truck a couple months ago. I still have the X-7a body, but I don't have a 50mm lens anymore, which makes it basically useless. Also, I always had trouble toting around a full-size SLR, so I'd leave it at home a lot and miss a lot of pictures.

This camera is quite small, so I can take it everywhere. I've used its newer cousin, the SD300, and it's much less balky and slow than the Olympus we had for NR. The AF is actually quite decent, and it has a focus lock(!). It comes with an extra battery and a half-gig CF card.

I'm really looking forward to starting to see the world like a photographer again. I always really enjoyed looking at the world as a big puzzle full of photographs. It's been a long time. I'm so out of practice, I think I miss a lot of things now. I wonder how long it'll take me to get it back...
